Anyone traveling to Hue in central Vietnam will want to read Hue Cuisine, a fine introduction to the food of this city. Built on the banks of Perfume River, Hue was the capital of the country, the home of kings of the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945. In Hue Cuisine you can find out what royal cuisine was like and learn where you can taste it today. You can also find out about more common foods. Many guidebooks talk about Hue noodle soup (bun bo Hue), a soupmade from rice noodles and various ingredients – beef, stewed pork legs, onions, and chili, for example – ans dome will mention stuffed rice pancakes (banh khoai), but Hue Cuisine also talks about two of my favorites, clear dumplings with shrimp and pork (banh bot loc) and rice cakes with diced shrimp (banh beo tom chay). Although I’ve eaten banh bot loc many times, it wasn’t until I read Hue Cuisine that I learn exactly how these delicious dumplings are made. The fun of reading these handbooks is that they make you feel like an expert.

These handbooks aren’t just for tourist. They also a good source of cultural information. Though written in an informal and readily accessible style, they contain scholarly information concerning Vietnamese history and culture. One can trust this information because Huu Ngoc, author, is an internationally recognized expert on Vietnamese culture. Because they are packed with information about topics that often come up whenever the conversation turns to Vietnam, I believe business people, journalists and even professors of Southeast Asian Studies will find these useful works to have one their e-book reader or laptop in their traveling bags
